What is Public Liability insurance for golfers?

A recent survey from England Golf showed that golf is the fifth-largest participation sport in England, with nearly 4 million people playing a round of golf in the UK. What’s more, membership numbers are up by an average of 24 per club.

However, with increased levels of participation comes an increased risk of golfers accidentally injuring someone on the course. There have been several high-profile instances of this, most notably in the 2018 Ryder Cup, when Brooks Koepka’s wayward shot struck a spectator and blinded her in one eye. At the amateur level, there was the incident where James Gordon’s mishit shot struck and blinded Anthony Phee at Niddry Castle Golf Club, resulting in a £397k court case.

Unfortunate accidents like these can have significant financial ramifications—and reiterate how vital it is that all golfers don’t take unnecessary risks and have Public Liability insurance every time they set foot on the course. The Court of Appeal ruled in 1998 that if you either injure someone else or damage someone else’s property, such as a car, due to a wayward shot on the golf course, you could be held financially responsible.

Despite what you might think, even if you shout “fore!”, you will still be responsible for any resulting injury or damage. However, if you have Public Liability insurance, your legal liability is protected if you injure someone else or damage property while playing a round.
